Bicycle accidents can be especially devastating because cyclists are the least protected of anyone using the streets. One moment someone may be enjoying the freedom of a bicycle ride and then a distracted driver’s mistake can tragically bring an end to that trip.
Los Angeles County is without a doubt the most dangerous place for a rider in all of California. Over a seven-year period, the county has three times as many bicycle accidents with injuries as the second-place Orange County.
These scary incidents are heartbreaking when they involve a young person on a bicycle and even more so when they involve a careless driver who didn’t bother sticking around to face the consequences of the accident.
Teen Bicyclist Injured in Los Angeles County Accident
A 14-year-old boy on a bicycle was struck by a hit-and-run driver Friday in Los Angeles County and remains hospitalized. CBS2-TV reported the accident happened Friday morning around 7:30 a.m. in Hawthorne on October 2, 2020.
Hawthorne Police say the teen was in a crosswalk riding across Doty and Rosecrans Avenues when a car traveling eastbound hit him at a high rate of speed. The boy suffered a major head injury and he remains in the hospital in serious condition.
Investigators say the driver did not stop after the collision. They say a white four-door Toyota, possibly a Camry was involved. It probably has extensive front-end and windshield damage. Anyone with information about this car or the driver is asked to call the Hawthorne Police Department.
Help for Victims After a Hit-And-Run Bicycle Accident
Any Hit-And-Run accident can be especially difficult to get over because the victims and their families may have to face not ever getting justice in the accident. The at-fault driver not only left the victim behind, he or she also left the family to face the financial and emotional costs of recovery.
The recovery of the victim will be the first priority after a terrible collision. As the victim and his or her family try to return to normal life, they may have to seek help with all the medical bills involved.
If the hit-and-run driver is never apprehended, the compensation may have to come from a claim against the family’s own auto insurance policy in the form of uninsured/underinsured coverage. The victim or a family member or guardian would file it against their own insurance to get help with the victim’s expenses now and in the future. An attorney working for the family can make sure the insurance company treats the victim fairly.
If the hit-and-run driver is found and arrested, a claim for damages can move forward for the family and the victim. This civil claim would be filed against the responsible driver and his or her insurance company. The claim can be filed even if the driver is still involved in a criminal trial over the hit-and-run charges.
The victim can file a claim even if he or she wasn’t wearing a helmet. The driver is still responsible for the injuries they inflicted with their carelessness.
